General Boiler FAQs

How long does a boiler typically last?

Most modern boilers last 10–15 years when serviced annually and fitted with water treatment (filter + inhibitor). If yours is older, breaking down, or inefficient, a replacement can lower bills and improve reliability.

What pressure should my boiler be?

Cold system pressure is usually 1.0–1.5 bar. When hot, it may rise to around 2.0 bar. If it drops below 1.0 bar regularly, you may have a small system leak or expansion vessel issue — contact us to check.

Do I really need a boiler service every year?

Yes — annual servicing keeps your boiler safe, efficient, and under warranty. A service includes safety checks, combustion analysis, cleaning and performance tests carried out by Gas Safe engineers.

What are the warning signs my boiler needs attention?

Common signs include frequent pressure loss, strange noises (kettling), pilot/ignition faults, cold radiators, visible leaks, or error codes on the display. Turn the boiler off if you smell gas or suspect a flue issue and call us.

What’s the difference between combi, system and regular boilers?

Combi boilers heat water directly with no cylinder (great for smaller homes). System boilers use a cylinder for hot water (good for multiple bathrooms). Regular (heat-only) boilers work with a cylinder and tanks (often in older systems).

Will a new A-rated boiler save me money?

Replacing an older non-condensing boiler can reduce gas usage significantly. Correct sizing, smart controls, a clean system and regular servicing all help maximise savings and comfort.

Do smart thermostats really help?

Yes — smart controls (e.g., Hive, Nest, Tado) optimise schedules, reduce waste and improve comfort. We can supply, fit and configure them, or connect your existing kit for best performance.

What is a magnetic filter and do I need one?

A magnetic filter traps sludge circulating in your system, protecting the boiler and radiators. It’s recommended on modern condensing boilers and should be cleaned during annual service.

Why are some radiators not heating properly?

Causes include trapped air, stuck valves, imbalance, or sludge build-up. Try bleeding first; if issues persist, balancing or a system flush may be required for even heat across rooms.

Do you work across South Wales?

Yes — we cover Cardiff, Pontypridd, Porth, Bridgend, Rhondda, Llantrisant and surrounding areas, with fast response from our local Gas Safe engineers.
